Doing it for Yourself

Although DIY was initially a very popular craze from the seventies onwards, it did experience a lull in recent years as people became more affluent and were able to afford professionals to cater for their DIY requirements, rather than attempting it themselves.

What was the point in having a go and potentially making a mess of it, when you could hire someone experienced to do it for you who actually knew what they were doing!

However, with the UK jobs market in its current dire state, more and more people who would not have considered doing their own painting and decorating are now considering picking up the screwdrivers and paintbrushes and having a go at it themselves. (more...)

So... what is DIY?

DIY stands for Do It Yourself and has a number of implications, both in and out of the home. The traditional image of DIY is the man of the house dusting off the paint rollers or putting up a wonky shelf. The term has since taken on much wider connotations and covers a far wider area.

Do it yourself now enters into the world of maintaining your own possessions and mending broken items. The can even stretch to car repair, although do be careful to read your Car Insurance policy before attempting to fix major faults with double sided tape.

Do it yourself has even spread into the kitchen, the garden and even the workplace in certain domains. It would seem the DIY revolution has taken over almost everything when it comes to saving a penny here and there. (more...)

Why Do It Yourself?

Why DIY, when you can rely on professionals who know what they are doing? Be it for painting, wood work, construction, no matter what the job is, there are always handymen and professional people who offer their services. In spite of this, some people prefer doing such things themselves. What could possibly be the reason for it?

There are many reasons for doing it yourself. DIY work has gained popularity slowly over the years. This is in fact ironic because back in the day, people always did their own repair and maintenance work. The idea behind doing it your own way using your own skills slowly started becoming popular again the 80s.

One of the most attractive benefits of DIY work is the money saved. A lot of money can be saved by doing jobs yourself; sometimes even enough for a well deserved holiday after you have successfully completed the project! But before you start heading to the International Currency Broker , read on. (more...)

DIY, the Most Rewarding Hobby

DIY work has an alternative or counterculture vibe to it. In the age of mass production and consumerism, there is something special about DIY. Whether it is repairing a floor, building a shelf, or making your own clothes, all DIY work has a feeling of creativity and achievement associated with it.

One of my friends recently lost his job, and that is when he discovered his love for DIY work. It wasn't that he enjoyed his job, in fact, he hated it, but being without a job, he suddenly found that he had a lot of time! He started by building a couple of shelves for his mum, which turned out very nicely!

This activity eventually grew into building custom furniture for extended family and friends. Now, without stepping into a jobcentre or applying for a single job, he has found the work that he cares about, and is actually good at! He now works by order on custom built and hand painted pieces of exclusive furniture. (more...)

Restore an Old Home in Italy for Tremendous Savings

While the rest of Europe experienced double-digit dips in their housing prices, the Italian market remained stable. Of course, this does not mean that they were completely untouched. In 2009, property values in Italy fell by about five percent. And while this was a cause for concern, it paled by comparison to the twenty-eight percent decline in Spanish real estate.

Why and how has the Italian market remained strong? Well, one reason is that their housing market has traditionally been quite stable. Perhaps this is due to their population, which has not experienced much growth. For this reason, home builders do not put up many new homes, even when the market is good. In the end, it is a simple supply and demand issue.

Should you buy home for a Sardegna vacanze ? As an investment opportunity, there are few markets that are more stable than the Italian real estate market. And since they have experienced a small decline, the coming years are expected to be quite profitable. This is particularly true for foreign investors who buy older homes. (more...)

Finding Great Deals in a Down Market

One of the hardest hit areas during the global recession was real estate. Markets all over the world suffered double-digit declines as investment quickly dried up. But now that the recession has come to an end, international investors are beginning to examine attractive foreign real estate once again. This is happening all around the world.

But because investors are apprehensive, there is presently a large supply of luxury villas to rent and buy. These properties are available in just about every country that has experienced significant real estate declines. That means that you can expect a price that is ten to twenty percent lower than the market price.

We also want to take a moment to discuss unique investment opportunities. In any poor market, the homes that are at the low end of the price spectrum are going to suffer the most. More often than not, these homes will be priced well below their market value. (more...)

Install Solar PV Systems for Free Electricity

In 2009, the UK Government finally confronted the issue of climate change. Following in the footsteps of other European nations like Germany and Spain, the UK announced a bold new plan to reduce carbon emissions by a third by 2020. The government has already earmarked 450 million pounds that will be invested in renewable energy sources over the next decade.

The project organisers also set targets for the number of new green jobs (1.2 million) as well as UK homes that will produce their own energy (1.5 million). To encourage the switch to clean energy sources, the government plans to offer tax breaks to homeowners who embrace these new technologies. In this article we are going to discus solar pv systems.

Why should you install solar panels on your roof? As you are undoubtedly aware, most people continue to rely on traditional forms of energy to heat, cool and illuminate their homes. The reason for this is simple: they are much cheaper than solar or wind power. (more...)

Basic Window Treatment Installation

Installing window treatments is one of the most popular home improvement projects. The reason for this is simple—it is a job most people can handle on their own. In this article we are going to take you through the process from start to finish. And do not worry, it will be a short trip.

Where to start? There first thing you must do is measure each window that will need a blind. Use a tape measure and record the height and width from the inside of the window frame. You may need someone to help you measure or to take down the numbers.

Later, when you go shopping for window blinds, give these numbers to the window treatment specialist. Let him know that you measured the windows from the inside of the window frame. Since most windows are standard sizes, in all likelihood there will be a bevy of blinds from which to choose. (more...)

The Advantages and Disadvantages of DIY

If we are even remotely handy around the house, we often face the choice of whether to do home improvements ourselves or to get in a professional to do it for us. Both ways have their advantages and of course disadvantages.

The scope of DIY covers a broad range of activities such as painting the house, making shelves or fitting raambekleding as the Dutch say! Whilst we may be good at one type of DIY we cannot be experts in everything, so the first question would be – are you competent enough to do the particular job yourself?

If so, do you have the motivation to do the job yourself? There are so many half-finished projects in this country which might never see completion, so if you do not have the time or energy to do the job yourself in a reasonable amount of time then you should consider hiring an expert. (more...)

Electric Shower or a Mixer Shower ?

When choosing a new shower it is important to take the domestic water system into consideration before deciding which type to buy. This is because some domestic water hot water systems can not support certain types of shower. However, fitting a shower can usually be carried out by a DIY enthusiast as long as they know what they are doing and follow instructions carefully.

Although there are different styles of shower available from many DIY suppliers, basically any shower falls into one of two categories : The electric shower which take cold water from the tank and heats the water directly from the unit, or the mixer shower that works directly from the domestic water system.

The electric shower is basically a water heater that only heats the water that is actually used . The water is always hot and the shower works independently from the rest of the domestic system. An advantage of an electric shower is that it can be fitted to any bathroom. A mixer shower takes the water from the domestic water system so when the water in the house is hot the shower will be hot too. A slight drawback to the basic mixer shower is that it is susceptible to changes in water pressure and can run cold if taps in the house are run elsewhere. However a mixer shower with a thermostat can alleviate this problem and maintain water at a constant pressure and even temperature. (more...)
