Doing it for Yourself

Although DIY was initially a very popular craze from the seventies onwards, it did experience a lull in recent years as people became more affluent and were able to afford professionals to cater for their DIY requirements, rather than attempting it themselves.

What was the point in having a go and potentially making a mess of it, when you could hire someone experienced to do it for you who actually knew what they were doing!

However, with the UK jobs market in its current dire state, more and more people who would not have considered doing their own painting and decorating are now considering picking up the screwdrivers and paintbrushes and having a go at it themselves.

Some people are adapting to it very well and are making a pretty good job at it whilst others (myself included!) should never have picked up a paintbrush or hammer in the first place. In fact it should be made illegal for hardware stores to sell DIY materials to certain people in the UK!

That said, the new wave of DIY enthusiasts shows no sign of abating and there seems to be a new trend to the quality and style of the new aficionados. Whereas the old style smacked of chipboards and laminate, the new DIYers seem to prefer flock wallpaper and high quality reclaimed furniture.
