The Advantages and Disadvantages of DIY
If we are even remotely handy around the house, we often face the choice of whether to do home improvements ourselves or to get in a professional to do it for us. Both ways have their advantages and of course disadvantages.
The scope of DIY covers a broad range of activities such as painting the house, making shelves or fitting raambekleding as the Dutch say! Whilst we may be good at one type of DIY we cannot be experts in everything, so the first question would be – are you competent enough to do the particular job yourself?
If so, do you have the motivation to do the job yourself? There are so many half-finished projects in this country which might never see completion, so if you do not have the time or energy to do the job yourself in a reasonable amount of time then you should consider hiring an expert.
Then, of course, there is the economic side – can you afford it? Just remember that although hiring someone might seem expensive it can be worth it in terms of how quickly and professionally the job is finished. In all cases though, make sure that you get at least three quotes on the job.
Weigh up the pros and cons of both before making the final decision on this.
